Blog# 174: Meryl Nass – an Unsung Hero Saving Lives

Meryl Nass, an Internist practicing in Maine, had her license to practice medicine suspended by the state’s medical board for using Ivermectin and Hydroxychloroquine to help save the lives of people suffering with covid before the vaccines were rolled out.  She saved many lives, according to medical records, and did not lose one patient to covid.  Despite her excellent record before the pandemic’s onset, as well as her stellar record of saving many lives, her practice was shut down when the government and health board learned that she was using Ivermectin and Hydroxychloroquine to successfully treat people ill with covid and other problematic ailments.  The charge against her stated that she was spreading misinformation.  Meryl was educated at MIT, for her undergraduate degree, then went on to attend New Jersey Medical School, and earned her MD from University of Mississippi in 1980.  She held challenging positions, such as Director of Pulmonary Rehabilitation at Mount Desert Island Hospital, in Bar Harbor, Maine.  Dr. Nass was using off-label medication to treat private patients who had few or no other options, since the vaccines were not yet available.  Some Asian medicine practitioners have successfully treated themselves and others with Acupuncture, Herbal Medicine, and sometime nutrition and Qi Gong.  

Just recently, she won a case against the Maine Medical board, who had insisted that she take mental health testing in order to have the possible option of continuing practicing medicine.  In the past, when people take those tests, it is in a hospital setting, and most likely, they would have decided to find her mentally unstable and then required her to come for therapy on a regular basis or else possibly face institutionalization.  At any rate, now, it has been judged that the requirement was out of line and that she can move ahead in the appeal to clear her name and regain her medical license.  Hopefully, she will be able to resume practicing medicine again.  In the meantime, she has been doing valuable work in helping with physician’s rights and patient’s rights and protection.   Not only is it important for her to be able to practice medicine in ways that she finds most helpful to patients; if she is free to do this, so will other doctors be free, and they will not be just limited to the very few current approved methods and prescriptions.

There have been many physicians and other scientists who have been prevented from offering the most help to the world by using not just their foundational education, but also their innovations and new theories.  Galileo and Semmelweis come to mind.  If Semmelweis theory of the cleanliness of hand-washing during the process of childbirth had been accepted, many women’s lives would have been saved.  Each were persecuted for their innovations.  Eventually, after their deaths, they were shown to be correct.  There were many other innovators that also suffered the same fates, facing prosecution during their lifetimes and only vindicated after their deaths.  The medical or scientific communities were just not ready for their new theories and innovations.
